Week 3
Week 3
Rate Overall Exp. 3 I think this week was somewhere in the middle. It was difficult at times but also a very short week with all the inclement weather.
Observe: This week I attended a faculty meeting concerning our new reading intervention launch. The faculty planned on testing our new rotations this week on Wednesday. Do to the inclement weather we will be launching the program next week.
Reflect: This week I had a chance to read some of my teachers feedback and reflect upon it. When teaching phonics, I need to slow down a bit and allow some of my students to process the information. I have several students who are quick to answer and even though they are correct, I'm not giving others the opportunity to process and respond. By just adding 20-30 seconds more it allows these students more time to think about their response. I have improved on my nonsense words. Some of my students are struggling with syllables and nonsense words. Its really wonderful to see them answer correctly and with more confidence.
Focus: My short term goal is to be productive this week working on next weeks lesson plans. My long term goal is to continue to work on my portfolio and attend a course on Tue. at a participating school in my district.
Have Courage: "Never let them see you sweat." When with your students be confident and consistent. Students want to love you which is fine but often they look at you as their friend. We as student teachers are teachers. Be confident in what you say and use positive reinforcement whenever applicable. Do "not" let students take advantage of you and follow through explaining consequences. I have been challenge quite often this semester and have had some students treat me as a peer. I've had to be consistent with consequences even if they don't like me as a friend they must respect you as a mentor. I mentioned confidence because if you are confident with your decisions you may not be challenge as much. Trust yourself you will make the right decisions.
Data Analyzed: With our new intervention for literacy coming next week I have had an opportunity to review students literacy scores. My intervention group is Level K. Many of these students are right in the middle. With some support they can meet their goal. I will be using techniques we have learned in class such as echo reading and the 6 syllables. I'm looking forward to working with students I haven't met before.
Some advice for other student teacher's would be to hang in there. Plan your days and practice the day before. It's really helpful if you prepare the night before class for a lesson the next day. We have had several distractions in the last few week and being prepared with work already on the board has been very helpful.
NC Teacher Candidates Standards ( reference activities from lessons)
Standard 1: Teachers Demonstrate Leadership
This standard applies to my experience this week in many ways. I've used data to plan for my reading intervention group. I've communicated to my student what my expectations of them are going forward. And I'm determined to create a safe environment in my classroom for all my students. I will be consistent in my classroom rules and will continue to be a role model to my students.
Standard 2: Teachers Establish a Respectful Environment for a Diverse Population of Students.mu
I recognize that my classroom is very diverse. I've gotten to know the community and my peers who work in my assigned school. I've been talking with and working with the EC department concerning several of my students. Having this insight about my EC students has been helpful in the classroom.
Standard 3: Teachers Know the Content They Teach.
Its important to know more than the content you teach. I've been looking at articles, tweets, and reference books to help build my knowledge in several areas to help enhance my lessons. I have referenced real world situations that use area, perimeter, and other subjects we teach. I want my students to understand that they are learning content they can will use in their academic future.
Standard 4:Teachers Facilitate Learning for Their Students.
I've been collaborating with other teachers in my grade. We've planned out each week together. I have offered advise on what applications can help with our material. I have also mentioned giving the students a survey asking how they learn best. I hope to gain some insight on what techniques will help them learn best.
Standard 5: Not Applicable. I have not attended any course to further my education this week.

Hi Chris,
ReplyDeleteI think that is great you are learning from your mistakes in phonics. When I started teaching phonics last semester, I had to relearn sounds which I had never thought about before. The county school where I am at uses a software program called Letterland phonics. Each letter has a different character with it. Your teacher gave you some great advice which I need to apply with my lessons. I am so anxious sometimes for students to answer quickly. If they do not respond in five seconds, I start getting anxious. I need to be sure and remind myself that the wait time may be longer and more bennificial to some students than others.
I am glad you were able to keep to your short term goals with lesson plan preparation.
I hope to see you tomorrow for the edTPA workshop. I will be there.
Chris, the inclement weather this week was very frustrating due to making it a short week. I'm glad you are already being proactive and thinking ahead to the next week. Having students come in and already be aware of what is expected of them is a great first step for a productive day. Best of luck next week!
